Description

The Shell Zipper Pull was inspired by medieval “ex-votos” (Latin for “from a vow”), objects that pilgrims offered at shrines during the Middle Ages in the hopes of miracles through saints’ intercession. Ex-votos were thought to be thaumaturgical, or miraculous, and could be purchased at sacred sites from nearby merchants, apothecaries, or church shops.

A shell is the symbol of the Camino, and images of it can be found on the art, architecture, and directional markers seen along the trail. Medieval pilgrims sewed shells onto their hats & clothes; large shells were given to them as reward for completing their pilgrimage. Present day walkers attach shells to their backpacks at the beginning of the Camino to designate themselves as pilgrims.
